Consumption of fruit and vegetables in the EU

Regular consumption of fruit and vegetables is considered an important element of a healthy and balanced diet. In the European Union (EU) however, slightly more than a third (34.4%) of the population aged 15 or over did not eat them on a daily basis in 2014, while less than 15% (14.1%) consumed at least 5 portions each day.Full text available on EUROSTAT website

 

Public consultation on a draft scientific opinion on Dietary Reference Values for thiamin
This document proposes dietary reference values for thiamin for adults, infants and children, pregnant and lactating women.

More on https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/consultations/call/161005EFSA has set adequate intake (AI) for vitamin D at 15 µg per day for healthy individuals over one year of age. EFSA also published a “Scientific opinion on dietary reference values for vitamin D”. The publication was accompanied by a technical report on the outcome of a public consultation. There was also a “Joint explanatory note” by EFSA and the UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) on their respective approaches in deriving DRVs for vitamin D (EFSA-related links are now active).

 

Ireland publishes obesity plan that aims to reduce average person’s weight by 5%

School children from 20 countries participated in European School Sport Day
As reports come in from the second European Week of Sport, early results point to the European School Sport Day® as the EU initiative’s biggest event, moving approximately 1.5 million school children in 20 countries across in Europe on 30 September 2016. The event expanded significantly from last year when it was organised in three countries (Hungary, Bulgaria and Bulgaria) as an international pilot programme supporting the first European Week of Sport. Read the full story here
